Dora Cake/ Pancake Recipe with Homemade peanut nutella


Hi guys, as usual today’s I’m back with yet another simple & delicious Sweet Pancake Recipe; it is Japanese Dorayaki pancake aka Dora Cake. Especially kids will love these for sure, because Dora Cakes are soft & fluffy pancakes that sandwiched together with chocolate spread over it. Traditionally Dorayaki pancake had sweet red bean paste, however nowadays there are many varieties of fillings are popular all over the world not only in Japan. Super easy to make unlike souffle pancakes this recipe is fool proof, anyone can prepare them easily.

Nutella or any other chocolate spread is ideal for Dora Cake. As for you I’m with a homemade nutella recipe using peanuts. Definitely try out healthy version of chocolate spread with your family. This Pancake Recipe with homemade peanut chocolate spread is the best out of the world.

Dorayaki pancake originate in popular Japanese manga series called “Doraemon”. Doraemon is a robotic cat whom time travels & he is pretty tempt to eat Dorayaki (sandwiched Japanese pancakes) just like Garfield fond of lasagnas. That’s the background story of Dora cakes, so that being said let’s make them in easy way.


For about 4 servings (5 inch in diameter pancakes)
Ingredients for the pancake batter
  1. All-purpose flour 125g
  2. Baking soda ¼ tsp
  3. Baking powder ½ tsp
  4. Pinch of salt
  5. Eggs 1
  6. Melted butter or oil 20g
  7. Butter milk 160ml
  8. Powdered sugar 30g


Note: If you don’t have butter milk use 160ml of full fat milk with ½ tsp of vinegar or lemon juice. Or you can replace milk & use 160ml of water in that place and of course taste will be different than usual.


Steps To Make the Dora Pancake Recipe
  1. Sift flour with powdered sugar, baking powder, baking soda & salt. Set aside.
  2. Mix the butter milk, egg & melted butter.
  3. Pour the milk mixture onto the flour & incorporate them well. The batter should be a thin one with runny consistency, its perfect. Don’t panic it not like making regular pancake which need thick batter to have fluffy pancakes.
  4. You can transfer batter into a jar because it will be easier to pour the batter to hot pan for cooking pancakes.


5. In medium flame place the pan & wipe the pan with a damp paper towel to have nice control over the heat.

6. Then pour out the batter on hot pan, use a measuring cup if you want to have exact same sized pancakes, put in here I’m just eyeballing it.

7. Cover the pancake with a lid to cook for anywhere between 2 – 4 minutes until bubbles form on the top.

8. Flip the pancake check whether pancake turn into golden brown color & turn over.

9. Cook for 1 minutes, there is no need to cover for now.

10. Then remove the pancake from the pan. Repeat the process to cook all pancakes just like this.

Assembling the Dora Cakes
  1. Either wait till pancakes to cool down or you can have it warmly.
  2. On one pancake spread or pipe chocolate spread generously. Place another pancake on the top of that pancake.
  3. Serve Dora Cakes with some fresh fruits aside, hence I made larger ones I cut into half. Try to make small sized pancakes they will look cute on the plate when we serving.

Note: you can use whatever filling for sandwiching. Like jam, cream, red bean paste or even without filling you can have it your own.

Homemade peanut nutella
Ingredients for the homemade peanut nutella
  1. Peanut 1cup
  2. Vegetable oil 1/8 to 1/4 cup
  3. Sugar ½ cup
  4. Cocoa powder ¼ cup
  5. Vanilla essence ½ tsp
  6. Salt ¼ tsp



  • Hazelnuts are the perfect ingredient for making nutella at home, if you do have them on have; great use them in here. Even almonds works fine too.
  • The required amount of oil varies of consistency in chocolate spread. To get thicker spread use 2-3tbsp of oil or to get thinner spread use about ¼ of oil. When making the spread use little at first & latter on add rest of oil to adjust needed consistency.
  • Sugar quantity also can adjust to your taste like between 1/3 cup to 1/2 cup and even more as per your taste.


Steps to make the homemade peanut nutella
  1. On a pan over medium heat roast peanuts till it become brown in color.
  2. Put the roasted nuts on a kitchen towel & wrap it well. Then squeeze & rub vigorously on the covered nuts over towel so that skin of peanuts can be easily blistered away.
  3. Unwrap the kitchen towel & peel off the skin of peanut just by brushing them on hand.
  4. In a food processor/ power blender or grinder add those peanuts in. blend till it become paste like this.

5. Blend about 5 minutes to get smooth paste & scrape the jar once in a while till it happens.

6. Then add the oil about 2tbsp at first & again blend it. Once it become very thick puree; add vanilla, salt. Sugar & cocoa powder.

7. Blend for another 1 minute. Your chocolate spread is ready to go, do a taste test add sugar if you feel so. Put more oil if it’s not for your preference.

8. Store this in an air tight container at room temperature for up to 3 weeks.

 If you do have chocolate on hand make even tastier chocolate spread like this. For that you will need;

  1. Hazelnut/ peanut 1cup
  2. Cocoa powder 1tbsp
  3. Chocolate (semi sweet or dark chocolate) 340g
  4. Powdered sugar 3 tbsp
  5. Vanilla essence ½ tsp
  6. Vegetable oil 2tbsp
  7. Salt ¼ tsp

As above mentioned roast the nuts, loose the skin & blend it to form a paste.

  1. In the meantime you need to melt the chocolate over double boiler or microwaving it.
  2. Into the pasted peanuts add oil, sugar, cocoa powder vanilla & salt. Continue to blend till it get very smooth texture.
  3. Lastly add the melted chocolate process it for about 1 min until they all combined together.
  4. Store this in an air tight container at room temperature for up to 3 weeks.


Japanese Dorayaki Pancake Recipe is one of my favorite due to its deliciousness & easy to make. As you can see we can make with everyday pantry staples, if you expect kids as your guests try to make these Dora Cakes; they will definitely enjoy them. Texture wise Pancake Recipe is soft & fluffy with touch of sweetness, so even without sandwiching pancakes with additional spread you can have them. Homemade peanut nutella recipe beats all of other filling options once you taste it. Plus it is healthy because we didn’t use any artificial ingredients for making the chocolate spread.
