Get advantaged, start vegetable gardening at your home


As whole world work on a one particular mission which is to defeat COVID – 19 disease, most people need to stay at home being socially isolate. So most of us have whole world’s time in our hand. To be able to spend it in a valuable manner we can choose vegetable gardening. It’s a golden opportunity to being able to grow our own vegetable 100% organically, so why not we start vegetable gardening?

 Honestly speaking neither do me a gardener & I’m totally beginner to that field, but together with you (I hope you do so) I started vegetable gardening. I want to dedicate this article for everyone out there to show the silver lining in dark cloud of “corona virus”. In the area where I’m living, people start to grow their own vegetables at home & once they harvest it they share with other people. So my village doesn’t have tragedy situation for foods & it’s a fortunate that we can have pure organic foods at our doorstep. Mainly because I’m encourage by that & I want you to be inspired also for new resolution, that’s why today I posting this article.

Being inside the home whole day we have more than enough time & manpower to do so. To start gardening there wasn’t many thing required, you can see when going through the article. Plus we don’t need a lot of space to grow fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits. Even we don’t really need a garden as long as we have a pot, some dirt, water, and sun, we can grow some tasty things. Let’s say you staying at apartment, you can grow in your balcony or window area where sunlight comes in. Plant breeders know that after taste, home gardeners want a high yield in a small space, so they develop varieties that can grow in a small footprint or even live in containers all year long.

Did you see we only need tiny bit space to grow vegetables, herbs & flowers; if we smartly managed the space. Gardening gave us

  • Social benefits like improving health, enhancing food and nutritional security, social equity and gender balance, preserving indigenous knowledge and building integrated societies etc.
  • Economic benefits like income generation and improved livelihood, improved household economic welfare.
  • Environment benefits by recycling which helps to reduce soil erosion and making the crop canopy layer reducing the velocity of water falling to the soil and reducing split erosion and leaching. Also soil conditioning and soil conservation done through the gardening.

So these are the pictures I took from one of my relative’s home. They maintain their garden well & even though it’s not according to establish as formal structure, they use their space well balanced.

The vegetables suggested below are common, productive plants that are relatively easy to grow. It would be wise to find out what plants grow best in your area depend on soil conditioning, and when the best time for planting them is. I suggest you to first go for below vegetables than conducting complex care required vegetables. After being familiar with you can enrich your gardening with them & start from small portions. 

Gotu kola also known as Indian pennywort or Asiatic pennywort (Centella asiatica) is the easiest plant to grow among vegetables. As a salad along with grated coconut, lime juice & little bit of spice, it really delicious. Practitioners claim the medicinal plant has the power to boost brainpower, heal skin issues, and promote liver and kidney health. You only need at least a pot or some space to grow this herb in the parsley family. Compose soil, sun light & water can bring the harvest out easily. Plus regular daily care don’t need that much for the growth of gotu kola.

As similar to gotu kola green cabbage (kola gowa) also don’t require much effort to have harvest even it can be harmed by insects. As you can see its beautiful when growing up. You also need sun light for this vegetable also. As similar to gotu kola salad this can also prepared in that way with a tempering. It’s delicious & easy to make.

Sri Lanka has few variety of chilies & you can start planting them inside of a pot or soil. It easy to care & can get results more quickly with a good maintains. With good sun light, soil condition can enhance the growth of its.

Malabar spinach in English called Nivithi (Basella alba) also need open air & grow as a perennial vine, so we can plant them giving some space to it. From seeds of Malabar spinach we can start planting this vegetable. We can make this type of spinach as a curry & have good notorious benefits for human body especially for skin, hair, and bone health. They also provide protein, iron, vitamins, and minerals. The possible health benefits of consuming spinach include improving blood glucose control in people with diabetes, lowering the risk of cancer, and improving bone health, as well as supplying minerals and vitamins that can provide a range of different benefits. As kola gowa you need good care protecting from insect harming.

As we call kangkong (Ipomoea aquatica) in local name, it known for water spinach, river spinach, water morning glory, water convolvulus, or by the more ambiguous names Chinese spinach, Chinese Watercress, Chinese convolvulus, swamp cabbage can be also easy to grow. Water spinach can be propagated either by seeds or by cuttings. Hence it is a semi aquatic plant, a creeper that grows in or near the water on moist soils. Easiest method to propagate kangkong is just cutting several 30-40 cm long cuttings from young growth and plant 15 cm deep in potting mix. For planting choose a site with full sun and well-drained soil. Either grow it in pot (which is better as kangkong grows aggressively) or on the ground. You can also plant it near the edge of a pond or other water bodies. We need to provide it full sun. However, it also grows in partial shade. This can be prepared as a curry or a stir fry, it is super yummy when adding dried Maldive fish.

Okra, lady fingers in English know, in locally we call Bandakka (Abelmoschus esculentus) is easy to grow and use and looks lovely due to its beautiful flowers. It’s also rich in vitamin A and low in calories, which makes it a great addition to your diet. As a curry, stir fry or salad with deep fried okra with onions, green chilies & lime juice is tasty dish to prepare. As a warm-weather crop, okra appreciates full sun. Okra is adaptable and will grow in most soils, though it performs best in well-drained soil that’s rich in organic matter. If you are planting okra transplants, be sure to space them 1 to 2 feet apart to give them ample room to grow. Plant okra seeds is easiest way to do & give at about ½ to 1 inch deep and 12 to 18 inches apart in a row. You can soak the seeds overnight in tepid water to help speed up germination. Okra plants are tall, so space out the rows 3 to 4 feet apart.
